- ¶3 WHAT MAKES CHIP-MUSIC SO GOOD ?

- ¶1 Many people think that chip-tunes
- is the greatest, and other people
- think it stinks, but why ? Well, as
- I'm a musician myself, I would like to
- share some of my own opinions on the
- subject, because I think that it
- concerns many of the scene-guys of
- today. So, here we go.....
-
- About 7, or maybe 8 years ago, a
- new computer was invented to the
- world;Commodore 64. At that time, the
- C-64 was a great machine, with great
- graphics and nice music, cool code
- (compared to similar machines), and so
- on.... Well, actually, I did not own
- a C-64 my own, so my point here is
- that the chip-music was born on that
- special computer. Visiting friends
- who owned C-64, was always very nice,
- and I did as often as I could !
- Suddenly one day, a new computer came
- around in the stores, and so everybody
- ran to buy this new computer:¶3AMIGA 500
- ¶1was born ¶3! ¶1Well, I guess you all know
- this story from before of, so lets
- jump to where we are today.....
-
- ....Some musicians of today are
- more known for their career as a
- chip-tune composer than for making
- music with "real" instruments. In a
- way, you may say that the chip- music
- is made of only "computerized" sounds,
- and that it sounds a lot different
- from, for instance, synth- music. I,
- personally, think it is a lot easyer
- to make chip-music than it is to make
- "real" music, but on the other hand, I
- don't think that people who have
- specialized them- selves on
- chip-tunes, had that in mind when they
- first decided to do so ! I think that
- one of the main- reasons for composing
- chip-modules, is that the music is
- "born" on the C-64, and as, maybe more
- than ¶350 ¶1% of all ¶3AMIGA¶1-owners had C-64
- before they bought ¶3AMIGA¶1, it certainly
- has something to do with that !
-
- So, what is actually chip-music ?
- I guess that every ¶3AMIGA ¶1owner have
- heard once or another. But just to
- clear some things, I will shortly
- explain what chip-music is to me. The
- music is always built on chip-
- instruments, with sometimes only drums
- sampled. (This is at least how I do
- it myself....) It is also very often a
- very "happy" melody, if you understand
- what I mean. Bass is also very often
- high-sounded, compa- red (What is this
- word ? -Ed) to the drums. The
- arpegio in these tunes, are also very
- frequent. This is the chords in these
- modules. Besides, it's often only a
- couple of patterns long, and this is
- also one of the reasons that these
- modules often are very short. Whether
- that is good or bad, I actually don't
- know, but as chip-tunes frequently
- appears on introes and loaders, I
- guess it's positive ! On the other
- hand, this music is because of it's
- lenght often monotonous. Maybe you
- think I'm wrong, but this is my own
- opinion about it. Anyhow, you might
- think that I don't like chip-music,
- (because I didn't own a C-64 ?) but
- still, I like chip-tunes very much !
-
- ¶2 Ok, I guess I've written enough
- about this subject by now, but it
- would be very nice if some of you guys
- (musicians ?) out there would respond
- to this article ! After all, I like
- this kind of music, so it would be
- nice to hear from a guy who think it
- stinks, or at least do not like it !
