  1. ¶3   WHAT MAKES CHIP-MUSIC SO GOOD ?

  6. ¶1   Many  people  think that chip-tunes
  7. is  the  greatest,  and  other  people
  8. think  it  stinks, but why ?  Well, as
  9. I'm a musician myself, I would like to
  10. share  some  of my own opinions on the
  11. subject,   because  I  think  that  it
  12. concerns  many  of  the  scene-guys of
  13. today.  So, here we go.....

  15.    About  7,  or  maybe 8 years ago, a
  16. new   computer  was  invented  to  the
  17. world;Commodore 64.  At that time, the
  18. C-64  was  a great machine, with great
  19. graphics  and  nice  music,  cool code
  20. (compared to similar machines), and so
  21. on....   Well, actually, I did not own
  22. a  C-64  my  own,  so my point here is
  23. that  the  chip-music was born on that
  24. special  computer.   Visiting  friends
  25. who  owned C-64, was always very nice,
  26. and  I  did  as  often  as  I  could !
  27. Suddenly  one day, a new computer came
  28. around in the stores, and so everybody
  29. ran to buy this new computer:¶3AMIGA 500
  30. ¶1was born ¶3!  ¶1Well, I guess you all know
  31. this  story  from  before  of, so lets
  32. jump to where we are today.....
  33.  
  34.    ....Some  musicians  of  today  are
  35. more  known  for  their  career  as  a
  36. chip-tune  composer  than  for  making
  37. music  with  "real" instruments.  In a
  38. way,  you may say that the chip- music
  39. is made of only "computerized" sounds,
  40. and  that  it  sounds  a lot different
  41. from,  for instance, synth- music.  I,
  42. personally,  think  it is a lot easyer
  43. to  make chip-music than it is to make
  44. "real" music, but on the other hand, I
  45. don't   think  that  people  who  have
  46. specialized     them-     selves    on
  47. chip-tunes, had that in mind when they
  48. first decided to do so !  I think that
  49. one of the main- reasons for composing
  50. chip-modules,  is  that  the  music is
  51. "born" on the C-64, and as, maybe more
  52. than ¶350 ¶1% of all ¶3AMIGA¶1-owners had C-64
  53. before they bought ¶3AMIGA¶1, it certainly
  54. has something to do with that !
  55.  
  56.    So,  what  is actually chip-music ?
  57. I  guess  that  every ¶3AMIGA ¶1owner have
  58. heard  once  or  another.  But just to
  59. clear  some  things,  I  will  shortly
  60. explain what chip-music is to me.  The
  61. music   is   always   built  on  chip-
  62. instruments, with sometimes only drums
  63. sampled.   (This  is at least how I do
  64. it myself....) It is also very often a
  65. very "happy" melody, if you understand
  66. what  I mean.  Bass is also very often
  67. high-sounded, compa- red (What is this
  68. word   ?   -Ed)  to  the  drums.   The
  69. arpegio  in these tunes, are also very
  70. frequent.  This is the chords in these
  71. modules.   Besides,  it's often only a
  72. couple  of  patterns long, and this is
  73. also  one  of  the  reasons that these
  74. modules often are very short.  Whether
  75. that  is good or bad, I actually don't
  76. know,  but  as  chip-tunes  frequently
  77. appears  on  introes  and  loaders,  I
  78. guess  it's  positive  !  On the other
  79. hand,  this  music  is because of it's
  80. lenght  often  monotonous.   Maybe you
  81. think  I'm  wrong,  but this is my own
  82. opinion  about  it.  Anyhow, you might
  83. think  that  I  don't like chip-music,
  84. (because  I  didn't  own a C-64 ?) but
  85. still, I like chip-tunes very much !

  87. ¶2   Ok,  I  guess  I've  written enough
  88. about  this  subject  by  now,  but it
  89. would be very nice if some of you guys
  90. (musicians  ?) out there would respond
  91. to  this  article !  After all, I like
  92. this  kind  of  music,  so it would be
  93. nice  to  hear from a guy who think it
  94. stinks, or at least do not like it !
